On Saturday we awoke in the wee hours of the morning to watch the locals haggle over animals. Otavalo is famous for its indigenous craft market held on Saturdays, but we thought the real draw to Otavalo was the animal market.

Set amongst the Andean Mountains locals barter for guinea pigs, chickens, rabbits, pigs, cows, donkeys, horses, sheep, and sometimes llamas and alpacas. We found the market to be interesting and an insight into the local culture. Chris took many pictures, some of which can be seen here. As usual, I spent most of my time scheming of how to get them all free—especially the cute rabbits, chicks,and guinea pigs. I may be venturing back toward being a vegetarian…
